HISTORY
HISTORY OF MALENY MANOR
Dianne Weedon, a 23-year-old Home Economics graduate with a passion for hospitality, realized her vision of creating Australia’s most exclusive guesthouse. After training at the renowned Cordon Bleu in Paris and traveling through Europe, she was inspired by ‘home away from home’ establishments that combined luxurious accommodation, personalised service, and fine dining.
Her search for the perfect location led her to the picturesque village of Maleny. On a 30-acre property, Dianne collaborated with architect Frank Raadschelders to design a residence reflecting Federation and Queensland Vernacular styles, with subtle nods to French chateaux and Swiss chalets — every detail considered, from climate-responsive design to private balconies framing ocean views.
Dianne oversaw the construction as Project Manager, working closely with local builder David Wilson to bring her vision to life without compromise. Two years later, Maleny Manor opened its doors in October 1989, with six ensuited suites, two dining rooms, an open-ceiling fireplace, sauna, indoor Jacuzzi, tennis court, pool, and meticulously landscaped gardens. The all-inclusive guest experience featured meals prepared by Dianne, premium beverages, and attentive service.
Shortly after opening, Dianne was unable to continue her dream of an all-inclusive guesthouse. Maleny Manor was then listed as a prize home, before being purchased in the mid-1990s by Geoffrey Thomas, who continues to own and operate the estate 30 years later. As demand grew for destination celebrations in the region, the property evolved naturally into a dedicated wedding and events estate. Its scale, privacy and uninterrupted views towards Mount Coolum positioned it as a setting of rare distinction.
Over three decades, Maleny Manor has refined its offering while remaining true to its foundations — exclusivity, precision and a seamless guest experience. Today, the estate stands as one of Queensland’s most established private wedding venues, shaped by heritage and defined by its core ethos: a luxurious, fully serviced venue with impeccable attention to detail, exceptional dining, and personalised service.
